Walking in El Torcal de Antequera: Across Karst, Between Clouds and Vultures
Karst. Wind. Stone. Step in among the towers of layered limestone and the world falls quiet. Up here at 1,200 metres, the Sierra del Torcal breathes the spirit of the Jurassic sea: rock formations that were coral reefs 150 million years ago now stand above the plateau as a forest of sculptures, shaped into dripstone, sphinx and sombrerillo rocks. Across the 12 km² of the natural park lies a landscape you would normally only find in picture books – carved over millions of years by water, wind and frost.
Waymarked Trails and the Trackless Karst Wilderness
Three main trails open up the karst plateau: the Ruta Verde (1.8 km) makes a relaxed introduction, the Ruta Amarilla (3.1 km) is a middle-distance loop through the most spectacular rock formations, and the Grand Circuit (8.6 km) is one for the experienced – trackless in places and best attempted only with a GPS route. Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) wheel above the plateau, their breeding colony among the largest in Andalusia. In spring, wild orchids bloom between the rocks; in summer, the sun beats down on the plateau at 1,339 metres. Discover all the walking routes here, along with safety tips and the best time of year to visit El Torcal de Antequera.
