Antigua Ruta Roja: the guided summit hike in El Torcal to the Camorro del Mástil

Most of the trails in El Torcal de Antequera can be walked on your own. The Ruta Verde, the Ruta Amarilla, the Grand Circuit: all waymarked, signposted and there to be explored under your own steam. But there is one trail that is especially worth doing with a guide. A trail that climbs higher than all the others. One that puts you at 1,348 metres and, on a clear day, lets you gaze all the way to the African coast. The Antigua Ruta Roja, the old red route, is simply a completely different experience with a guide.

The Torcal Alto visitor centre offers it as a guided tour in two versions: the “Ruta de los Ammonites” (4.5 km, around 3 hours) and the “Old Red Route” (8 km, around 5 hours, combined with the Millennial Labyrinth). Both lead to the highest point in the park, the Camorro del Mástil at 1,336 to 1,348 metres.

What makes this route so special with a guide is that you get your bearings in complex terrain that can feel bewildering without a local expert to lead the way. The guide explains what you are looking at: the fossils in the rock, the karst morphology, how each layer came to be. This is no gentle stroll, it is a lesson in the history of the Earth.

What awaits you on the Antigua Ruta Roja

The summit, the panorama and the finest rock formations in the park

The trail leads deeper into the karst massif than the self-guided routes. The guide takes time over explanations you would never get on your own: what is that fossil in the rock? Why does El Sombrerillo still stand, even though its base is narrower than its cap? How old is this layer, and what lived here when it was laid down? And at the very end comes the Camorro del Mástil, named after the old mast pole once used by climbers and today marked by a geodetic point. On clear days the view stretches all the way to the silhouette of the North African coast.

On the way you pass El Sombrerillo, the best-known rock formation in the Torcal: a mushroom-shaped block of limestone whose base is narrower than its cap, yet which has stood for millions of years. Just below it, in the rock, you can make out an ammonite, a fossilised shell from the Jurassic period, 150 million years old. It is this combination of geological sculpture and biological fossil that makes the Torcal so extraordinary, and the Antigua Ruta Roja brings it home more vividly than any other route.

The Old Red Route (8 km) is the longer version and also leads through the so-called Millennial Labyrinth, an area of especially tightly stacked limestone layers that lie one on top of another like the pages of a giant book. Here the history of the Earth becomes tangible: every layer is an epoch, every fold a tectonic jolt. For anyone with time to spare, this is clearly the more rewarding of the two.

Small groups, plenty of insight

The Antigua Ruta Roja was once open to all. But the damage done by uncontrolled visitor traffic to the fragile karst vegetation and the rock formations led the park to close it to independent walkers. Today it may only be entered in small guided groups, with the guide keeping foot traffic to a minimum and steering the group past the most vulnerable spots. That makes the tour a lesson in the logic of conservation too: sometimes the best way to protect a place is not to open it up to everyone.
