The three waymarked walking routes in El Torcal de Antequera – the Ruta Verde, the Ruta Amarilla and the Grand Circuit – can all be walked under your own steam. If you’re after something more, book one of the six official guided tours run by the Torcal Alto visitor centre. The programme ranges from a 90-minute short walk for families and those pushed for time to a full-moon hike in summer. Every tour is led by trained guides from the nature park, and each one takes you to spots and shares insights you simply wouldn’t come across on your own.

The six tours in detail

1. TorcalExpress – El Torcal in 90 minutes

The TorcalExpress is the shortest and most accessible of the guided walks – 1.5 km, 90 minutes, €8.50 per person. The tour leads to a fossilised ammonite site and to the El Tornillo natural monument, one of the park’s most photographed rock formations. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy a sweeping panorama all the way to the Málaga coast.

There are two sessions daily: session 1 at 10:00 (check-in from 09:30) and session 2 at 12:00 (check-in from 11:00). Recommended for ages 6 and up. Bringing a dog? Book session 1 – dogs aren’t allowed on the shuttle bus.

2. El Torcal en Familia – the family tour

The family tour is designed specifically for children aged 4 to 8: a shorter route (approx. 1 km), a gentler pace and age-appropriate explanations. Children under 4 go free. One caveat: the tour is offered in Spanish only.

3. Ruta de los Ammonites – the Ammonite Route

The Ammonite Route is the park’s flagship guided walk: 4.5 km, around 3 hours, €13.50 / €11 concession, ages 6 and up. Your guide leads you to the Torcal’s most striking fossil finds – ammonites and belemnites embedded in limestone that lay on the seabed 150 million years ago. Add to that the rock formations and geological insights you’d miss walking on your own. Starts at 10:30, autumn through spring.

4. Ammonites at sunset – ammonites at sundown

The summer version of the Ammonite Route: the same route (4.5 km, 3 hours), but timed so that the sunset over El Torcal becomes part of the experience. Fridays and Saturdays in summer, with start times between 17:45 and 22:00 depending on the sunset – confirmed by email. €13 / €10 concession, ages 6 and up.

Tip: bring a head torch, as the walk back can fall in half-light. On clear summer nights, the astronomical observatory at the visitor centre offers post-tour stargazing through a telescope.

5. El Torcal under the full moon – the full-moon hike

The standout experience in the summer programme: the full-moon hike. 4 km, around 3 hours, €14 / €11 concession, ages 8 and up. The tour sets off just before dusk and ends in darkness – as the moon rises over the limestone towers, the path is lit by moonlight alone. Head torches are compulsory, though ideally you’ll hardly need them.

There’s a picnic stop along the way – bring your own food and drink. The visitor centre is closed during the tour, so plan a loo stop beforehand. Dates follow the full-moon calendar, from June to September. ⚠️ Verify the 2026 dates with the visitor centre.

6. Old Red Route – the longest guided tour (Antigua Ruta Roja)

The most demanding and the longest of the guided tours: 8 km, around 5 hours, €17.50 / €14.50 concession, ages 8 and up. It climbs to the highest point in the park – the Camorro del Mástil at 1,336 to 1,348 metres – and combines the Ammonite Route with the Millennial Labyrinth. Starts at 09:00 (check-in 08:45). On a clear day, the view from the summit stretches all the way to the African coast.
